Kwibuka 32: Remembering the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda

On Tuesday, 7 April 2026, over 200 dignitaries, diplomats, members of the Rwandan community, and friends of Rwanda gathered at the ZK Matthews Great Hall, UNISA, Pretoria, to mark the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Organised jointly by the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in South Africa and the United Nations, the event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, international organisations, civil society, and Rwandans living in South Africa in solemn remembrance of more than one million lives lost.
The programme featured a high-level panel discussion under the theme: “Lessons from the Genocide against the Tutsi: Defending Human Rights in Today’s World.” Speaking on behalf of the Government of South Africa, DIRCO Acting Chief Director for East Africa, Ms Bulelwa Kiva, reaffirmed South Africa’s solidarity with Rwanda and underscored the importance of international cooperation in combating hate speech. In his keynote address, H.E. Emmanuel Hategeka emphasised that the genocide was a premeditated atrocity and cautioned that genocide ideology persists in evolving forms, including through online platforms and artificial intelligence.
Cape Town
Over 250 members of the Rwandan community and friends of Rwanda gathered at the Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Speaking on behalf of the High Commissioner, First Counsellor Mr. Didas Mungarurire underscored that remembrance is a shared responsibility and emphasised that the fight against genocide ideology requires the collective resolve of the international community.

Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathered at the African Leadership College of Higher Education (ALCHE) to mark Kwibuka 32 in remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The commemoration was preceded by a solemn Walk to Remember, honouring more than one million innocent lives lost.
Madagascar

The Government of Madagascar, the United Nations, and members of the diplomatic corps joined the Rwandan community at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Madagascar to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Speaking on behalf of the Malagasy Government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. N’Diaye Alice, emphasised that the commemoration goes beyond remembrance, bringing people together around a universal message to prevent division, uphold human dignity, and build societies founded on peace, inclusion, and mutual respect.
